The women's semifinals at the 2012 French Open are all set. It'll be--
  • No. 2 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 4 Petra Kvitova
  • No. 6 Samantha Stosur vs. No. 21 Sara Errani
For Sharapova this is her third appearance at the French Open semifinals (2007, 2011, 2012). For Stosur this is also her third appearance (2009, 2010, 2012) in the French semis. For Kvitova and Errani this is their first ever semifinals appearance at Roland Garros. In fact, for Errani, this is her first ever appearance in a semifinals of any Grand Slam event. Prior to this, her best showing had been at this year's Australian Open where she made the quarterfinals.

Of the 4, only Stosur has ever reached the final, doing so in 2010 where she lost the title match to Francesca Schiavone.

If Sharapova reaches her first French final she will mathematically take over the World No. 1 ranking, win or lose. If she wins the title she will complete the career Grand Slam, having won all 4 majors at least once. She won Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008. Only the French title has eluded her and she is now just two match wins away from history.

Kvitova (2011 Wimbledon) and Stosur (2011 U.S. Open) each have a Grand Slam title under their belt.

In the end, regardless of which one wins the title, there will be a first time champion at Roland Garros.
