2012 Australian Open: Good-Bye Sam!

As the 2012 Australian Open marches into the second round, it would have to move on without it's hometown heroine. Defending U.S. Open champion and Australian native Samantha Stosur became the first major casualty of the first Grand Slam of the year. The World No. 5 Aussie lost her first round match (6-7, 3-6) to unranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania, much to the astonishment of her home crowd at Rod Laver Arena.

It has not been a good homecoming for Stosur as she also lost in the second round of the Brisbane International to No. 46 Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic earlier this year.

There is no question that the immense pressure of playing at home is what derailed Stosur. In the end, the extremely high expectations from her home crowd proved to be her undoing. Stosur was the only Top 10 player (male or female) to falter in the first round.
