Is The BCS Just Simply BS?

The 2011-12 college football season is alive and well and like with every prior season, it's come with all the debates about the polling, the BCS standings, whether or not their should be a playoffs and blasé blasé.

Personally, I like the polling system because of, well, all the controversy that comes with it.

Here's how the current Top 10 looks like in the AP Poll:

1. Oklahoma
2. Alabama
3. LSU
4. Boise State
5. Florida State
6. Stanford
7. Wisconsin
8. Oklahoma State
9. Texas A&M
10. South Carolina

The USA Today Coaches Poll mirrors the AP except for Oklahoma State (7), Wisconsin (8) and Nebraska (10).

Here's how MY Top 10 would look like if, of course, I had a vote:

1. LSU
2. Alabama
3. Boise State
4. Oklahoma
5. Oklahoma State
6. South Carolina
7. Florida State
8. Stanford
9. Texas A&M
10. Wisconsin

The LSU Tigers being No. 1 is a no-brainer in my book by virtue of their monster win over the then-No. 3 Oregon Ducks in Week 1. While everyone else was playing "soft" games to get their feet wet, the Tigers and Ducks played a "clash of the titans" game right out of the gate. So why should the Oklahoma Sooners have No. 1 privileges when all they did was bully a little guy (Tulsa) in Week 1?

The Alabama Crimson Tide also took the easy way out and beat up on a little guy (Kent State) in Week 1 but at least they played (and won) at then-No. 23 Penn State in Week 2. So the Tide (at least) showed that they are worthy of their #2 ranking by winning a huge game in hostile territory.

The Boise State Broncos are always an interesting item. They won a huge game in Week 1 at then-No. 19 Georgia, once again proving their worth. But unfortunately for the Broncos, in order for them to keep rubbing elbows with the "big boys", they must remain unbeaten. A loss by them is NOT the same as, let's say, a loss by Alabama. Fair or unfair, one Boise State loss is equivalent to 2 losses by a team in a power conference. Case in point is last year when the undefeated Broncos were in the national title conversation and as soon as they lost a heart-breaker in overtime, their name disappeared off the map. It's mind-boggling how because of one loss the Broncos went from being national title contenders to playing in the Las Vegas Bowl. They weren't even considered for an at-large BCS bowl bid, while 2-losses Arkansas played in the Sugar Bowl. So don't lose a game Boise State because if you do, your goose is cooked.

So all this love the Broncos get (as long as they remain unbeaten of course) is purely hogwash because, the minute they lose 1 game, they go back to their "second-class citizen" status. And having Oklahoma No. 1 just because they beat up on puny Tulsa in Week 1 is also purely hogwash.

....And for the record, I'm a huge Sooners' fan-- but even they would probably admit that LSU (to this point) is the No. 1 team.
