Today, Wozniacki was OUSTED from the French Open in the third round (6-1, 6-3) by No. 28 Daniela Hantuchova in a match that wasn't even close. What is going on?
Yesterday, World No. 2 Kim Clijsters was also sent packing in the second round. This marks the first time in the Open Era that the top two seeded women fail to make at least the fourth round in a Grand Slam event.
As for Wozniacki, the dogging from the media lives on and probably has gained strength. For the foreseeable future she will have to hear the same old chant, "Are you worthy of the No. 1 ranking without ever winning a Grand Slam title?" The only consolation for her is that regardless of who wins the title she will hold on to the No. 1 ranking after the tournament by virtue of Clijsters also losing. However, if Wold No. 3 Vera Zvonareva wins the title she would come within 260 points of the top ranking.
It'll be: Wozniacki with 9915 points to Zvonareva's 9655 points-- IF Vera wins the title.
On another upset note, World No. 8 and 2010 runner-up Samantha Stosur was also STUNNED by unseeded Gisela Dulko (4-6, 6-1, 3-6) in the third round.
It's been UPSET CENTRAL on the women's side so far. No doubt about it.
