First up was Mr. Fantastic, himself, Roy "Doc" Halladay who pitched 6 strong innings allowing 1 run in a no-decision against the Houston Astros. He left the game trailing 1-0 after the sixth inning. The bullpen would go on to implode in the 7th allowing 3 more runs. It seemed for the moment that Doc was going to begin the season on a losing note. The Phillies however scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to cut the Astros lead in half to 4-2. They then got strong relief pitching from Ryan Madson and Danys Baez who kept the game at 4-2 going into the bottom of the ninth. And then the Phillies did their thing. Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard led off with a pair of singles and in the blink of an eye the offense exploded for 3 runs off of closer Brandon Lyon (0-1, BLOWN SAVE) culminating with a winning walk-off single by John Mayberry.
Final score: Phillies 5 - Astros 4.
And it's not like things are going to get easier because next up, The Human Torch Cliff Lee. Oh, those blown saves!
