Madison Bumgarner, Dave Righetti and Fernando Valenzuela

Kudos to San Francisco Giants rookie pitcher Madison Bumgarner.

Bumgarner was the starter and winner in the Giants Game 4 clincher against the Atlanta Braves.

The win made Bumgarner the first rookie starting pitcher to win a postseason series clincher on the road since 1981. In 1981, Dave Righetti of the New York Yankees and Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers both won series clinchers as rookies on the road.

Righetti defeated the Oakland A's, 4-0, in Game 3 of the ALCS in Oakland and Valenzuela defeated the Montreal Expos, 2-1, in Game 5 of the NLCS in Montreal.

No rookie pitcher before or since Righetti-Valenzuela had accomplished the feat until Bumgarner did so last night.

For the record, Righetti is now Bumgarner's pitching coach.

Next up for Bumgarner and Righetti-- the Philadelphia Phillies.

Congrats, kid!
