College Football Time: Iowa Falls, No Love For Nevada

The Iowa Hawkeyes became the second preseason Top 10 team to stumble.

Following in the footsteps of the Virginia Tech Hokies, Iowa lost a tough game on the road against the Arizona Wildcats, 34-27. With the loss, the Hawkeyes fell from No. 9 to No. 18 in both major polls.

Meanwhile, Arizona surged in the polls moving all the way down to No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Poll.

New in the Top 10 are the Arkansas Razorbacks or the Wisconsin Badgers, depending on which poll you follow. Arkansas is No. 10 in the AP Poll while Wisconsin is No. 11. In the USA Today Poll, the rankings are flipped, Wisconsin at No. 10 and Arkansas at No. 11.

Personally, I think the AP got it right because Arkansas won a tough game on the road at the Georgia Bulldogs, 31-24, while Wisconsin barely escaped with a home win, 20-19, against the Arizona State Sun Devils. And as we know, in college football, scores matter!

Meanwhile, the team that has gotten absolutely no love whatsoever are the Nevada Wolf Pack. Yes, I know they play in the second-tier WAC Conference, but so do the No. 3 Boise State Broncos.

Nevada (3-0) had a huge win against the California Golden Bears, 52-31. Prior to this game California (2-1) had the No. 1 defense in the nation, allowing a total of 10 points in their first two games. The Nevada offense is averaging an incredible 50.67 points per game in their first three games (49, 51, 52) and not even California's stingy defense was able to stop them.

Why Nevada isn't in the Top 25 is beyond me?

As for the rest of the big boys (i.e. No. 1 Alabama), everyone else pretty much held serve.

And on the coach Brian Kelly front, both the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-2) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (1-2) are in trouble. Looks like the Brian Kelly switch isn't working for either team so far.

The upcoming poll busting games on tap are:
  1. No. 1 Alabama at No. 10 Arkansas
  2. No. 12 South Carolina at No. 17 Auburn
  3. No. 22 West Virginia at No. 15 LSU

There will also be two huge Pac-10 games:

  1. California (2-1) at No. 14 Arizona (3-0)
  2. No. 5 Oregon (3-0) at Arizona State (2-1)

And of course, Nevada at BYU, is huge for the Wolf Pack. If they win this one, I can't see how the pollsters can keep them out of the Top 25.

We'll see....
